Back in 2011, Coca Cola changed the iconic red colour of their can. For a good cause, though. You see, the company produced a special edition white-coloured can in order to raise funds for endangered polar bears.[i]
On paper, this idea was brilliant. But the company received unexpected backlash from consumers, who complained that the flavour of the beverage was “less sweet” than the ordinary red coloured can.
The problem? The formula was exactly the same. What happened was that people’s perception of the flavour was altered based on the change in appearance of the can. This resulted in a negative response from the marketing campaign – despite its clearly good intentions.
Now, if a company as huge as Coca Cola can fall victim to a branding scandal, what will people say about your company?
This is why it’s crucial that you test the design of your food packaging. You need to ensure every element of the packaging is in perfect harmony. So you should make sure that:
Modern food preservation allows many products to stay fresher for longer. This is largely due to advancements in the materials used for food packaging in Australia.
One example is the use of a metallized layer. The film, which is a cost-effective alternative to aluminium, is a high-barrier metallized laminate which can effectively protect a food product from oxygen, moisture, and other contaminants that can reduce the quality, freshness, and crispness of the food. [i]
Certain products to include this film are potato chips, pretzels, muesli bars, dried fruit, nuts, and crackers. Ultimately, the metalized layer has proven to be extremely popular due to its cost-effectiveness, versatility, and ability to greatly improve the value and shelf life of a product.
Another effective form of preservation is found in coffee packaging. Naturally, roasted coffee tends to release carbon dioxide for at least 2-3 weeks after being roasted. This means, when the coffee is stored into the packaging, the gas needs somewhere to escape to ensure the bag does not expand.
To prevent this problem, nearly all roasted coffee packaging has an in-built de-gassing valve. The valve allows C02 gas to escape the bag yet keep out oxygen, moisture, and other contaminants. As a result, the roasted coffee stays fresher for longer, which allows the consumer to enjoy the product at their own leisurely pace.

Our short-run digital printing promotion was a hit, with the streamlined, short-run process and Australian made option resonating with fellow brand owners, who were surprised with the quality level and turn-around times of our service. ]]>Utilising the short run capabilities of digital, along with Botanika Blends‘ design and a metalised film, we were able to create an eye-catching gold pouch! The allure of winning the cash prize was easily presented to consumers direct from the retail shelf with an amazing effect.
It wasn’t the first time we’d been able to create a quality packaging solution for a customer who didn’t need large product quantities, and certainly didn’t want to pay the set-up costs associated with other printing formats. We created a golden sachet for our customer Before You Speak, which allowed them to run a ‘Golden-Ticket’ style competition for their coffee product that would have been impossible without digital printing (or at least, incredibly costly!).

]]>When it comes to the issue of waste, it’s easy to suggest that we ban all plastic and move back to traditional packaging formats. Many suggest the notion of bulk-food stores that allow consumers to bring their own containers, and eliminate high quantities of waste. These stores are a great resource for those who can reach and afford them, and reducing excessive plastic packaging is definitely a step in the right direction.
Here’s the ‘but’ though- the modern world could not function without plastic; it’s integrated into every part of our lives, from food to transport to technology to medicine. Nor is the ‘zero-waste lifestyle’ achievable for the large majority of the population that are short on time, money and space in which to achieve such a goal. The reality of our situation is far more complicated than “plastic is evil”, and old-fashioned means cannot provide solutions to new-world problems. It’s easy to jump on a social bandwagon like banning straws and plastic bags when you care about the future of the planet, but these do little to tackle the real issues.
In fact, using glass, aluminium and paper instead of plastic would in fact create more waste to landfill, greater water usage, destroy more of the environment, and create astronomical carbon emissions in comparison to plastics- keeping in mind, that due to safety standards, the majority of traditional packaging formats on supermarket shelves are in fact virgin material, not recycled. The good thing about glass is its re-useability, but this still doesn’t outweigh the other environmental costs associated with the entire life cycle of its production and transportation.
Instead of blanket statements about our reliance on plastic, we need to look at how we got here and start the process of education and changing our poor consumer behaviours and ‘throw-away’ culture. This doesn’t just apply to packaging, either; material goods, from ‘fast-fashion’ to cheap homewares and furniture products have entrenched a poor ideology among current consumers, one which ignores the notion of investing for the long-term and instead relies on a constant replacement of goods to keep up with every-changing trends.
Companies all over the world are researching and developing new packaging technologies to find solutions to our waste problems, but it will take time and cannot come at the expense of food safety and shelf life. Consumers also need to educate themselves on the 'buzz words' surrounding sustainability issues and be reasonable in their expectations when it comes to packaging at this point in time. For instance, 'bio-degradable' doesn't mean compostable, and compostable doesn't mean plastic suddenly turns into dirt (if only). Kraft paper packaging isn't typically recyclable, and the 'made from 100% recycled plastic' water bottles that you may see advertised in the supermarket aren't actually made from post-consumer recycled plastics, but material straight from the product line (and hence still up to Australian food safety standards).
The biggest issue we face in Australia right now is an overwhelming infrastructure problem. Current processes cannot sustain our population, which is surprising considering we’re relatively small in comparison to many other western nations. We should be able to do better, to be self-sufficient in our waste disposal practices over the years ahead.
The government never bothered to invest in waste and packaging innovation before now, choosing to simply ship the problem elsewhere and ignore it like on that episode of Futurama. Now that we’re in crisis, they’re finally realising the cost of stagnation, and that the future of Australia relies on creating a truly functioning waste process, one that allows the majority of materials to be recycled post-consumer back into new products and fuel a circular economy, rather than rotting in landfill.
So what’s the bottom line when trying to help the environment?
Make better choices and reduce your own personal waste where you can, be vocal to your local government and brands about investing in better waste practices and eliminating unnecessary packaging where possible, and keep a long-term point of view. Oh, and make sure your packaging supplier is working on sustainable innovation too- because we're all responsible.
PRINTING
Gravure Printing:
A traditional type of offset printing which involves custom-made imprints on metal cylinders. Each cylinder has the imprint for a specific colour from the artwork, which when combined and pressed onto film material creates the entire artwork design. The set up costs associated with gravure printing are high, but for large quantities of packaging, this type of print becomes a more economical option, and can give a greater breath of design features (such as different pouch designs, film finish combinations etc. ), as well as top tier print quality.
Flexo Printing:
Similar to gravure, flexo involves custom-made imprints on metal plates and required a separate plate for each colour within an artwork. The set up costs of flexo printing are also high, but for large quantities of packaging (generally over 10,000), this type of print becomes a typically cheaper option. Due to a decrease 'dot-ratio' (almost like DPI on screens), flexo printing is generally of lesser- quality than gravure.
Digital Printing:
Think your home printer- but BIGGER! Digital printing has come a long way in the last few years, and now using top-of-the-range printers, you can obtain a high quality packaging product without the set up costs associated with gravure or flexo printing. It also means you can do multiple designs one after the other without changing machinery parts or waiting for plates to be made, which saves a lot of time and gets your product to the market faster. For first timers, it also gives a bit of a safety net, as design changes can be made after the first run if required, or trialled with a single printed mock-up before full production.
Pantone:
A Pantone Colour refers to a set, 'manual' of colours that have distinct codes and colour combinations, all of which are industry standard (every good printer has a Pantone book). Want the exact same blue on every print, every time? You can only get that level of colour matching with a Pantone! These are especially important for branding purposes- to the point that every major brand in the world has their own Pantone colour reference to ensure consistency.
CMYK- Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key (Black):
If you’re not using Pantone colours, you’re using a combination of CMYK! Each digital image on a screen or printed digitally uses a combination of tiny dots in these four colours (plus white, of course) to create the vast combination fo colours that we see. Just like when you zoom in really close to a picture and can see pixels, if you magnify a print of CMYK you’ll see the dots that make up an image. Even with Pantone colours, packaging print will still use CMYK in addition in order to create photo elements within the artwork.
Eyemark: An eyemark is a small, typically black or blue mark put on printed packaging film that indicates where a print repeat finishes, and is read by the machine in order to know where to slit the film.
POUCH TYPES
Stand Up/ Doy Pouch (abbreviated SUP):
This classic style pouch features a bottom gusset that allows the pouch to stand on its own on the shelf (hence the name). They’re good for anything from snack foods, to coffee, to soup, hence their popularity on the supermarket shelf.
Flat Bottom Bag (abbreviated FB):
A newer addition to the pouch family, the flat bottom bag utilises a rectangular bottom gusset AND side gussets for a ‘boxy’ shape. Due to this, they provide a stronger shelf presence, and better packing functionality compared to the SUP. A lot of frozen seafood products and muesli brands are starting to use flat bottom bags for this reason.
Quad- Seal Bag (abbreviated QS):
Basically a flat bottom bag without the bottom gusset... The quad seal is a good option for heavier products, as they offer stronger seals than a flat bottom (but won’t stand upright on their own!). The bottom seal of the pouch generally curls back underneath the bag when filled (such as with big bags of pet food or bulk coffee bags).
Three-Side Seal (abbreviated 3SS):
The original pouch design! This pouch has no gussets, and is good for small quantities of product or typically ‘flat’ items. They’re either hung (like jerky and smoked salmon), or slotted into an external carton (like soup mix) to keep them upright as they do not stand on their own.
Spout Pouch:
A spout pouch is typically a smaller style stand up pouch with a special spout closure which is used for pouring/consuming liquid products that are multi-use. They’re widely used for chilled baby food, flexible laundry detergent pouches, and sauce products.
PACKAGING PARTS
Gusset:
A gusset is a section of film that goes between the front and back of a pouch. The more gussets/bigger the gussets, the deeper the pouch. A stand up pouch only has a gusset on the bottom, while a flat bottom pouch also has side gussets which provides a ‘boxy’ shape and more filling/printing space on the pouch.
Zipper Closure:
A zipper closure is the re-sealing 'clip' inserted into many modern packaging pouches (like in a zip-lock sandwich bag) which allows consumers to open and close the packaging multiple times. It’s a must-have feature for many products that aren’t single-use only, and helps to preserve the product inside after opening.
Laser Score: When a pouch is laser scored, the top layer/s of film are weakened to provide an 'easy tear' from the tear notch.
Tear Notch: The proper term for the little holes that are punched out either side above the zipper closure, to allow for tearing off the top of a pouch for consumption.
Metalised Film:
People are often confused by this term, but metalised film isn’t the same as aluminium film! It is still metallic and silver in appearance, but more flexible than aluminium film, while providing a moderate barrier for many products.
Kraft Paper Film:
Kraft paper gives that traditional 'brown paper' appeal to packaging, but is laminated to an internal plastic layer to provide sealing and food barrier. (paper on its own doesn't give any shelf life!). Despite popular belief, kraft paper food packaging isn’t compostable or recyclable!
THE REST
MOQ- Minimum Order Quantity:
Typically refers to the smallest quantity of goods one can order. At TPS, our typical MOQ for short-run digital printing is only 1000 pouches, with the ability to do a single product mock-up too! Overseas, factories generally require a MOQ of at least 10- 15,000 before they're willing to take an order.
SKU- Stock Keeping Unit:
Each product and product variety (including different sizes or flavours/colours) a brand owns has a different SKU, and helps distinguish it from all other products (these are linked to barcodes!). If you have multiple SKUs within a same size packaging category (for instance, 4 different flavours of muesli each in a 250g portion), we can digitally print the four different designs at once without the set-up costs of gravure or flexo printing.
FMCG- Fast Moving Consumer Goods:
You may have heard this term thrown around in the supermarket, and it basically refers to any low-cost, fast-selling product (think anything from chocolate bars to fruit juice).
Many brand owners get confused by the concept of a front-opening zipper compared to a traditional top zipper closure, and wonder what the benefit is to both their product and their brand.
Your typical zipper closure inhibits the full opening of a pouch due to the zipper seal, which in turn hinders filling procedures. Front zipper closures however, due to their location, allow the pouch to open to its fullest point.
More space= easier filling= time saved + product spared!
Added brand benefits include the unique style of the zipper as a point of difference to many other pouch styles, as well as consumer engagement with the opening of the product.

]]>Packaging is integral to the way we present, view, interact, and consume products in the modern marketplace. Having evolved from serving its basic primary function of food protection and transportation, packaging has become a multi-functional extension of products and brands themselves.
The breadth of packaging options continues to extend, as manufacturers adapt to new materials and technologies. However, this advancement has also created confusion for brands in choosing the right packaging option for their products.
So how do new food entrepreneurs choose, when options seem endless?
The very first step for making any new packaging decision is to consider the fundamental needs of your product:
• Does it require a barrier from elements such as oxygen, moisture, or light?
• Is it a generally heavy, or lighter- weight product?
• How will the product be filled? By hand, machine, from the top or the side?
• Will the product be frozen, fresh, refrigerated, heated?
• How is it transported?
• Will it be displayed on the shelf, or hanging up, or stacked in multiples?
These are some of the vital questions you need to ask (and answer!) before you even begin to look at packaging options. Doing so will provide you with an essential guide through the clutter of unsuitable packaging formats.
Another thing to consider is your brand/product image, and how you want your product packaging to ‘speak’ to consumers on the shelf. Is it a premium product? Do you want it to appeal to health-conscious foodies? Is your product for people on-the-go? Is it for families?
Perceptions of your brand will be influenced by the type of packaging you use, so don’t disregard the importance of packaging!
You know your product and brand needs- where do you go from here?
The next step is researching each packaging category to match the specific packaging format to your product. Each format of packaging has its pros and cons, so it is worth reviewing options carefully to ensure a perfect match.
We can typically categorise packaging into two main groups: rigid and flexible.
Rigid Packaging consists of more traditional packaging options such as jars, hard plastic containers or bottles, glass, cans, and cardboard cartons or tubes.
The pros of rigid packaging types is that most are recyclable, and they provide an effective impact barrier for product protection. Many rigid options are ideal for liquid food and drink products.
The cons of rigid packaging are the excessive weight/size which many rigid options add to products (exacerbating freight costs), the high energy consumption used in production of rigid materials, and the mass of waste to landfill (global recycling rates for recyclable materials is poor). Cartons also provide a poor barrier for food products on their own.
Flexible Packaging is typically paper wrap or bags, plastic pouches, and plastic rewind film (used for confectionery wrappers etc.).
The pros of flexible packaging is that it is light-weight and is optimal for shipping volume (decreasing freight costs). Production costs and energy consumption are lower, and flexible packaging creates less waste-to-landfill than rigid packaging. Many options also offer great barriers to protect food products and prolong shelf life.
The cons of flexible packaging options are that they provide less of an impact-resistance barrier than rigid products, while recyclable and compostable options are hard to distinguish from their less eco-friendly counterparts. Similar to cartons, flexible paper options also provide a poor barrier for food products (unless combined with other materials).
Still confused?
You can easily gain inspiration from what is currently available in the market.
Rather than “re-inventing the wheel”, it could be beneficial to mirror a competitors packaging format rather than trying to stand- out from the crowd with a different packaging approach. It’s also important to note here that some packaging materials are harder/more expensive to print than others- be aware of your desired aesthetic or design, and know when it’s worth compromising for a better packaging option.
You have chosen a packaging format, so what do you do now?
Ask the experts, of course!
Choosing the right packaging supplier is as important as choosing the right graphic designer; Think of it like creating a house- your builder needs to be as good as your architect! Get off the computer and call around, talk to the people you may be dealing with in the future, and ask them all the questions you have regarding your packaging needs.
Suppliers should be knowledgeable, have lengthy expertise, and should be able to give you honest advice and suggestions. Having someone local can be beneficial, as not only will they know domestic food accreditation standards, they will also have experience with other local brands. The last thing anyone wants is to end up with packaging that isn’t up to Australian standards- or worse- isn’t entirely safe. Being able to easily meet with and contact your supplier, as well as view samples in person, can be tremendous support for budding food entrepreneurs.
If you choose to buy direct from overseas, you should consider the level of business security provided by your packaging supplier. While buying online can be cost-effective, it can quickly turn into a burden if you experience quality or logistics issues. Like many things in life, saving a few dollars in the beginning can cost you big bucks in the long-run!
Be careful and research, research, research. If time is of the essence, leave it to the professionals. Hopefully by keeping all these factors in mind, you’ll be able to make informed packaging decisions that properly represent your product, and give your brand the best chance for success.

It was clear to see the volume of smaller businesses whose quality packaging requirements weren’t being met due to the lack of low MOQ packaging options in the local market.
